Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple or compound. Usually opposite. Surfaces typically with hairs with glandular heads. Stipules usually absent.

Flowers: Flowers frequently in axillary cymes, rarely solitary. Flowers often 4-merous. with bilateral symmetry. Corolla of 5 petals, connate and often forming a tube, often bilabiate. The upper lip composed of two petals and the lower of three. Stamens adnate to corolla; with four (or fewer) fertile stamens. Ovary superior and composed of two fused carpels.

Fruit: Fruit often a capsules; berry; or composed of 4–nutlets.
